The year is 2020.
On December 21st of 2019, strange crystalline spires shot up from the ground at numerous points throughout the world. Some of them were in obscure areas in the unclaimed regions of the world. Others, more alarmingly sprung up in the middle of population centers such as Beijing, Paris, New York City, and Sydney among others.
Terror began to wash over the populace of some nations as influential people began to spread rumors of this being the final judgment via forms of media for their own gain. Martial law and riot control broke out among the more severe regions...setting a strict example for the others to follow, causing mixed reactions among the world community.
The phenomenon compelled immediate investigation on behalf of the major governments of the world. The areas around the spires were evacuated and blocked off while specialized hazmat teams were brought in to investigate. Upon inspection, the technicians performing the analyses found themselves growing more and more sluggish around the spire, finding emotion drawn and spirits low. A heretofore unknown energy radiated from the spire which interfered with the proper workings of electrical equipment. One of the researchers attempted to strike it with a sledgehammer to break off a piece for analysis, and found himself upon striking the spire shocked by the unknown energy causing death by electrocution.
All results of investigations would remain inconclusive...compelling the spires to become cordoned off by military forces, evacuating any and all areas within a five mile radius.
For the first month, the spires would have a minimal effect, aside from creeping out those stationed to keep outsiders away from them. Speculation abound about the origin and meaning played across all discussion and media, some thinking it a sign from god, others thinking it an alien presence, and yet others thinking this to be a new scientific phenomena.
Several days later ...all news stations had their feeds interrupted as a figure cloaked in a black trenchcoat with dark eyes appeared, his pale skin having little features as his white hair seemed to stand on end. His message brief, it sent a shiver up the spines of the viewers.
"Glory to the Keeper of Judgment...to defy the Obelisks is certain death. Submit your will, and only through penance and dedication will you be saved with a promise of a higher life once Judgment falls. Come now! Liberate the Eyes of our god from those who have oppressed you with society and laws...to embrace the calling of true nothingness"
