The doors burst open of the emergency room as paramedics rush Prime Minister Adoji Ito in on a stretcher. Men in suits swarm the area, with Dr. Mizuno and a team of strictly the highest ranking staff members on hand to receive him. They rush past the counters, the other patients and doctors into the nearest open emergency room where they start emergency treatment of the Prime Minister's bullet wounding.
His condition was already dire, having been evacuated from a deep floor and half across the town to get to the hospital. Blood loss was substantial and vitals were weak. While the military had a facility, it was at capacity and overworked due to wounded soldiers from non-media advertised defense operations and other incidents with the Covenant. He insisted against General Masuou's wishes to go to Shinjuku because it was the best civilian hospital in the city and the soldiers in the military hospital deserved all the attention they needed without his presence being a distraction on that facility.
Half an hour of work would pass as the group of specialists and physicians feverishly work to preserve the vitals of the Prime Minister. The extended time to reach the facility along with the stress and the bumpy ride left things in poor shape. The shot managed to sever several blood vessels and the overall blood loss was difficult to regain control from with the transfusions.
As the doctors struggle, a man with blue hair and a briefcase approaches the armed guards who were standing between the emergency room and the public areas. The man was the well known Jun Kaneko of the Kaneko corporation.
"I'm here to deliver medicine for the Prime Minister." he says simply. The guards naturally give Kaneko a staredown, before Masuou steps forward and tells them to back off.
"Boy, do you have the serum?" the older man says.
"Of course, in fact this is our latest and most potent formula yet, far more effective than the last version you commissioned for testing." Jun says, simply handing the briefcase to Masuou, whom opens it, inspecting the padded vial inside, before looking at Kaneko suspiciously again.
"This had better work..." he grumbles dashing back into the emergency room. Dr. Mizuno stares, but General Masuou insists this formula is an experimental serum that can save the PM's life. Mizuno is skeptical, but the dropping vitals quickly indicated that without something drastic he was gone anyway.
Against her skeptical nature, she reads over the instructions secured to the bottle and begins to administer it both to the bloodstream and directly on the internal damage. What happens over the next five minutes stuns the doctor: the flesh was rapidly regenerating before her eyes, allowing the doctors to stitch up and repair the original damage internally. Unfortunately, the nurse who put the serum into the IV placed too much in, and they had only a limited amount available for closing up some of the more superficial and flesh wound damage in the muscles, bullet entry points, and where they opened him up.
Two hours of work later, the condition is stabilized and they cart the Prime Minster to the ICU, while hospital administrators work with the Government officials on the conditions to follow with security and care.
Dr. Mizuno steps aside from the discussion when she sees Kaneko outside and approaches him with a serious expression in her eyes.
"How?"
"Mmm?" the younger man replies.
"Everything I know about medicine suggests that what I saw that formula do shouldn't have been possible. What is that exactly?"
"Trade secret." he says as he turns and starts to walk away. Dr. Mizuno motions to go after him, but is called back to the meeting of doctors and officials as he walks off. General Masuou follows Kaneko and walks beside him as he leaves.
"Why leaving so soon?"
"I don't care for hospitals and my role in this is done."
"How were you able to formulate something so much more effective in weeks time? Your last attempt had soldiers healing faster, but not like that."
"...A breakthrough fell on my desk. I take what I can get when I can get it. Just be grateful it works, I'll send the bill!" he says sarcastically enough to make fun of hospitals' tendency to overcharge for minor things. General Masuou is annoyed, but drops it, returning to the task at hand.
As Kaneko walks off, he mumbles to himself.
"Valdis...just what are you exactly?"
At the end of the day, Ito's condition had returned to a level where the doctors were satisfied he would recover. Dr. Mizuno was insistent that they be given more of that formula for both study and application, but the General was tight-lipped about it further, with the rest of his staff following suit. Dr. Mizuno eventually drops the entire thing, having much more work to do this day.
At the end of the day, there was always more questions than answers.
